How Local Vancouver Businesses Can Win Online This Christmas

Make Your Holiday Info Impossible to Miss

Christmas in Vancouver is so much fun. Van Dusen lights up, Commercial Drive feels extra cozy, and Kits is packed with last-minute shoppers ducking in from the rain. People are actively looking for gifts, experiences, bookings, and local spots to support.

And before they walk through your door, they’re checking your website.

If you’re a local Vancouver business, your website is often the first impression, especially during the holidays, but during this season, shoppers are scanning. Not reading. They want to know:

  • What are your holiday hours?
  • Do you have gift cards?
  • Are there any holiday specials or promotions?
  • Can they book an appointment before Christmas?

If that information is buried three clicks deep, they’ll move on to the next option (and in Vancouver, there are always options). So, make sure to add a clear holiday banner at the top of your site, update your homepage with seasonal hours. The goal isn’t to redesign your entire website, you just need to remove friction for people when they're in a hurry.

Optimize for “Near Me” and Local Searches

In December, search behaviour shifts. People type things like:

  • "Vancouver Christmas gifts"
  • "best cafe near me"
  • "Granville island holiday shopping"
  • "Vancouver local businesses"

If your website doesn’t clearly mention your location, neighbourhood, and services together, you’re missing easy local SEO opportunities. Make sure your footer includes your full address. Mention neighbourhood names naturally in your copy. Update your Google Business Profile. These small tweaks help you show up when locals are actively looking to spend money nearby.

Prioritize Mobile (Because Everyone Is Out and About)

Vancouver in December usually means one thing: rain. People aren’t sitting at desktops researching for hours. They’re on their phones, standing under awnings, walking between stores, checking hours and menus quickly. If your mobile site loads slowly, has tiny text, or makes booking difficult, you’re losing business in real time.

The good news is, you can test your own website from your phone! Check if booking feels easy, and if you can find key information in under 10 seconds. If not, then that's your starting point.

Make Gift Cards and Easy Purchases Front and Center

Holiday shoppers love convenience. Whether you’re a salon in Mount Pleasant, a fitness studio in Kits, or a restaurant downtown, gift cards are one of the simplest revenue drivers in December.

If you offer gift cards, make them obvious. Add a button in your main navigation. Feature them on your homepage. Mention them in your holiday messaging. The easier you make it, the more likely someone rushing between errands will complete that purchase.

Build Trust Quickly (Because Holiday Decisions Are Fast)

During the holidays, people don’t overthink. They skim reviews, glance at photos, and decide. This is where strong UX really matters.

Clear photos of your space. Testimonials. Simple pricing. A clean layout. These elements reduce hesitation. When someone lands on your site and instantly feels confident, they’re more likely to choose you over the shop down the street. Trust speeds up decision-making!

Don’t Overdo the Festive Design

Yes, it’s Christmas, and I would never be a grinch and tell you to skimp on holiday decorations! However, your website does not need falling snow animations and auto-playing music.

Seasonal touches are great! A banner, updated imagery, subtle colour accents. But heavy graphics can slow down your site and clutter your layout. The goal isn’t to look festive at the expense of usability. It’s to stay clear, fast, and easy, with a bit of holiday warmth.

Think Beyond December 25

Here’s something many businesses forget: the week between Christmas and New Year’s is busy too! Everyone is off work, booking those appointments for things they can't get done during the workday. They're out with their kids who are also keen little shoppers. And they're returning or exchanging gifts for something they truly wanted to buy in the first place.

Make sure your website reflects that! Encourage those early appointment bookings, highlight New Years promotions or boxing day sales. And if you do it well, have all your digital content ready before the holiday season even starts so you don't actually have to work on those days.

The Real Opportunity

From Granville to Commercial Drive, Vancouver shoppers genuinely want to support local businesses, especially during the holidays. But “support local” doesn’t mean “work harder to find information.” If your website makes things clear, fast, and easy, you remove friction at exactly the moment people are ready to buy. And during Christmas, that timing matters more than ever.
